Goulais River May Flood

The Sault Ste Marie District of the Ministry of Natural Resources advises residents living along the Goulais River and recreational users of the river that localized flooding may occur over the next several days.

Levels are expected to increase as well as the flow speed of the river. The heavy rains experienced in the past days have created high inflows in creeks, streams and lakes across the watershed.

This has caused levels and flows to increase in the upper reaches of the watershed to levels normally seen during spring flooding. Residents in the area are advised to monitor the river closely and to be prepared to respond to flooding as it occurs. It is expected that the full impacts of the rainfall will not be felt downstream for several more hours. Streams and rivers are also unpredictable at this point in time.

MNR advises all residents to keep their children, pets and themselves away from riverbanks. Shorelines can be unsafe.

MNR continues to monitor the water levels on the river and will keep the public updated as new information becomes available.
